Upgrading a Server running 4.1.0

I have a Dell Power Edge R2970 that had one CPU and four GB RAM installed and was running ESXi 4.1.0 build 502767. It was used for some older archived VM guest the we need to maintain for historical and Electronic Discovery purposes. We wanted to add some more older VM Guests to it had it had plenty of local storage for it Data Store. How ever it only had one quad core CPU and 4 GB RAM.  I ordered and install a second CPU and eight 4GB sticks of RAM. The server sees the second CPU but does not like the new RAM. Whin I use any combination of the new memory I get a Memory Error #2021, memory configuration error.

I reinstalled the original RAM and the server Boots but sits at the "Starting VMKernal Initialization" screen with no movement.  I rebooted the system before I left last night and it was at the same point when I arrived at work this morning.

Is VMwar 4.1.0 not smart enough to know/handle adding a second CPU to an existing installation?  Do I need to reinstall VMware with the second CPU installed?

Any ideas on the memory issue? According to Dell's spec's sheet this server can take up to 64GB RAM in 8 DIMM slots (4 white & 4 black). The RAM stick can be 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB sticks.  The sticks I ordered were 4GB DDR2 667MHz ECC REG DIMM (PC25300) which is the same type that was installed just twice as many and 4GB as compared to 1GB.

RDX tape drive not passing through

Hi

We are using ESX1 5.5.0 and have recently installed a USB 3 card with a Fujitsu RDX tape drive. In the BIOS this is all find, the drive is listed under USB devices, however the Windows 2012 installation only see's the USB 3.0 card. Has anyone come across this issue before?

Mixed units in vrops reporting

I vrealize that vrops is a new un-patched product (maybe the best brand new release that vmware has dropped in a long time!). One thing I found today is that at least datastore reporting values for parameters such as latency and rate are mixed.

For example if I run a VM Inventory Datastore I/O Report and do a CSV export I get Read and Write latency values some in microseconds and others in milliseconds. With I/O rates some are Bps, KBps and MBps. This makes the data very hard to manipulate (picture sorting in Excel). Hopefully future versions will use a single unit of measure for each param as to not confuse things.

Windows 8.1 black screen

There I was.. working with a few VMs and while in a Windows 8.1 VM answering some questions here the screen turned black and stayed black.

* Suspend/resume did not help.

* Selecting unity would throw up an error "ResolutionSetTopology failed"

* Shut down Fusion .. restart Fusion .. still the same problem

Finally decided to select "Shut down" from the VM menu and that cleanly shut down my VM.

Worked fine on a restart.

Have never seen this before.

vmware-fusion.log has this snippet around that time:

2015-01-09T22:54:41.712+01:00| VMware Fusion| I120: IsTopologySupported: Guest screen size limit: 5120x3200, 2 displays max, bounding box memory limit: 134217728 bytes.

This is on 2012 MBP with an external screen hooked up, resolution is set to 1024x768

OS X 10.8.5

ESXi (5.5) with iSCSI target on QNAP - poor write, dial-up read speeds

Hi and Happy New Year everyone,

I have a problem with read/writes to/from drive connected as iSCSI. Setup:

- host: HP Proliant DL360e Gen8; hypervisor on SD card

- 4x SSD as internal datastore. VM files (including primary disk) sit on it.

- VM's OS: WS2012 R2.

- 1x 1Gbps adapter assigned to VM.

- secondary disk: 4TB (ESXi limit) vmfs file sitting on 9TB LUN, mapped to an iSCSI target, located on QNAP (series x79, latest firmware), mapped as vd (rdm greyed out).

- iSCSI setup very simple - default options/values on ESXi host's iSCSI Software Adapter, one 1Gbps port on each side (QNAP and ESXi), CHAP enabled.

- Store on QNAP on RAID6, 10+ 4TB 7.2k drives, all healthy.

If it's not obvious from above: datastore mapped OK, over 1 path, drive mapped OK, accessible from VM. But:

Max write speed I've achieved was <30MBps; max read speed was somewhat lower (~20MBps, iirc). This itself I already would consider being an issue, since that's about a quarter of 1Gbps capacity.

Biggest issue however is, that if BOTH read and write occur at the same time, read speeds basically crawl - speeds vary from 20 to 100KBps...

I'd have few questions related to above:

1) is that normal behavior? I could understand lower performance on single sequential access drive while doing write and write at the same time, but still not this. Is it maybe something in the iSCSI design, that I'm not aware of? I must admit, I don't know all its ins and outs.

2) if that is not normal, can you see any obvious mistakes in above setup? I.e. could multipathing with binding help here - of is it rather for HA/redundancy purposes?

3) any other advices/tips you can give me? I.e., if that setup is not viable for the purpose (FTP backend), would NFS be an alternative? Or even NAS mapping? I'd like to get the iSCSI to work though - would be useful to build redundancy/backup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Chris

Fix for "could not connect using the requested protocol" not working

After experiencing this while trying to connect to my vcenter I used the following KB article to try and resolve with no luck:

Connecting to the AutoDeploy server fails with the error: Could not connect using the requested protocol (2011395)

With that said, I'm still having the same problem and I'm not sure what else to look at.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Can't logon to Horizon View Desktop with Persistent Disk User Profile

I setup a new desktop pool in Horizon 6. This will be used for supervisor level staff that need their same desktops each time they login. The pool is set for linked-clones, but with persistent disks for user profiles. I set the user profile to be stored on a persistent disk in the Horizon wizard. The persistent drive is set to be the users "Z" drive.

When I try to login with one of the entitled, accounts, windows gives me this error:

The user profile service service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded.

Is there something I need to change in Active Directory / Group policy? I've never dealt with persistent disk systems before. The VM OS is Windows 7 Pro x64.

It just seems like the profile doesn't know that it's supposed to be created on the peristent drive when I try to login.

Free iNodes on ESXi filesystem

What is the impact of not having enough free inodes on my esxi filesystem?

How is this problem corrected?

How often should I check for this condition?

How to kill stuck vmware tools install from the command line esxi

I've looked and looked (googled) for help on ending "VMware Tools Install" and noting seems to work.  I can't be the only one seeing this.

Please help.

I was able to find the following but it did not help at all.

cd /vmfs/volumes/[datastore]/[vmname]

vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms

Moving to vROPS 6.0 - ESXi 5.1

Ok.  I am getting conflicting information.  The release notes for vROPS 6.0 say it should support monitoring ESXi 5.1 hosts, but the Product Intercompatiblity matrix says otherwise that only 5.5 is supported.

It seems that even though I got no warnings during the migration that only 5.5 is supported as no other host is reporting data.  Is this true?  Or am I missing something?

Can someone confirm that they are monitoring ESXi 5.1 hosts with vROPS 6.0?  If so, any special config on the vROPS side?  Or am I crazy to think this should work?

Fusion Migration Agent fails - Unknown apiVersion

I'm trying to migrate a Win7x64 PC to Fusion 7.1.0 on my Mac (Yosemite 10.10.1) using Fusion PC Migration Agent 5.1.1.  After struggling with user account access, I had to create an new admin user with a simple password in order to get authentication working.  Then I had to deal with firewall issues.  However, having overcome this, the process begins, I get the progress bar panel, then it fails with the error:

Unable to create virtual machine 'Windows 7 x64'

Which is not a particularly useful error message.  Looking at the Fusion logs, I can see the following:

GetTargetProductVersion: Unknown apiVersion

On the PC, the Migration Agent log shows:

Converter::TargetVmManagerImpl::CreateVM

TargetVmManagerImpl::CreateVM: Vm creation failed with error Invalid argument : productversion

The implication is that there is some sort of version mismatch somewhere, possibly between Fusion 7.1.0 and Agent 5.1.1.  But that may be misleading.

Anyone have any ideas?

Retina display in Windows 8.1

Hi

Apologies if this has been answered before  , simple question , I have Windows 8.1 installed  on a new iMac 27" with 5K retina display , the display is stunning using the Mac OS X yosemite software , however I can't seem to get a good quality display in Windows , does the VMWare Fusion not support retina displays in Windows 8.1 ?

If I tick the box in settings/display to "use full resolution for retina display" then I only get 3/4 of the display on  the screen with black vertical bands down each side ?

Using VMWare Fusion 7.1.0

Any help would be appreciated

Many Thanks

John

Expected Netapp IOP Performance from a Cache only run

Dear All I am looking for some feedback regarding benchmark testing on our new Netapp FAS2552 running 8.2RC17 Mode 7 with Vmware using Iscsi  I have connected the Netapp to Vmware ESXi 5.5 with a 10gb connection from the SAN to the switch and from the switch to the host.  I set up iometre to  test using using 4k blocks in sequential reads with outstanding IOPs at 16. I have limited the sample size 100mb, this effectively is making a cache run from the SAN and I have confirmed the read has 100% hit rate. .  I am surprised to see that the maximum number of iop,s is only 20,000 with less than 90 MB-s being utilised.  I would have thought if the Netapp was serving 100% from cache memory the iop,s level would be significantly higher.  I have also benchmarked against a LUN from the Netapp directly into the Windows 2008 OS using the software initiator within the Windows operating system.  I am seeing very similar performance.  Given the fact that everything is being served from cache, does it seem right for iop,s at this level?  Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Can restricted/encrypted VMs be exported from Workstation 11 to vSphere Hypervisor?

I'd like to run an encrypted virtual machine that has an expiration date using restricted vm expiration. Can I create a restricted vm using Workstation 11 and then export it to run on vSphere Hypervisor? Or would I instead have to install a base OS and run VMware Player Pro? Are there any other ways to run an encrypted VM with a restricted expiration date?

Thanks!

Orchestrator and integration

I need to make orchestrator talk to a number of third party products such as a CMDB, IPAM, DCHP and backup product during the provisioning process.  What is the best programming language to use? Assuming I am fluent or have people on my team fluent in java, python, vb.net, javascript, and ruby, what is the best language?

Orchestrator and Plug-In development

I need orchestrator to talk to a number of third party systems for which no plug-in has been developed yet.  This is all part of a single Vm provisioning process.  Should I create a separate plug-in for each system for which no plug-in exists, or should I create one giant "Vm provisioning" plugin that can talk to multiple systems?

New to Virtualization - Need Product info

Navigating this forum is quite interesting.

I am trying to find out  the following

1. Which free VMWare product to use to supoort my need.

2. Where to find how tos specific to the suggested VMWare product.

Im currently attending classes studying for the LPIC 1 / 2 test. I do have Ubuntu single user mode loaded up in VMPlayer.

I want to setup 1 centos server, 1 ubuntu server and 1 windows server.

I want to create a virtual network that will be able to connect these 3 virtual servers so that as I progress through the course I can setup services within my own virtualized lab.

I will be using the following as a host :

IBM W530

OS Win 7 sp1

Memory 32g

Hardrive Space 500g

I would like to know which product is best suited to setup the lab.

I would appreciate any help or info.
