using multi monitors with diabled topbar

$

Hi,

i want to use the "cycle multiple monitors" feature with a disabled topbar.

I disabled the bar, using pref.vmplayer.fullscreen.nobar = "TRUE" in the preferences.ini.

It works all well to the point, i want to use my second monitor, because there is no hotkey for this feature. (i only saw the button in the bar so far)

So my question is now:

Is there any opportunity to use "cycle multiple monitors" without using the topbar, like a hidden hotkey?

Using Windows 8 Pro x64 with 16GB RAM as host and Windows 7 Home, Vista Home and Ubuntu 13.04 all 32bit (all 3GB of RAM and 4 virtual cores)

best regards,

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.  I'm reusing some code that was working fine on another system, but basic stuff isn't working on this system.  Although some things ARE working.

For example, I can successfully run new-virtualportgroup.

PS C:\> new-virtualportgroup -virtualswitch vSwitch10 -VLanId 2502 -Name vSwitch10VLAN2502

Name                      Key                            VLanId PortBinding NumPorts

----                      ---                            ------ ----------- --------

vSwitch10VLAN2502         key-vim.host.PortGroup-vSwi... 2502

And I can see the new portgroup created in VSphere.  But if I then try get-virtualportgroup....

get-virtualportgroup -Name vSwitch10VLAN2502

Several other Cmdlets are behaving similarly.  I'm lost.

When Orchestrator 6.0 comes out, will it work with vSphere 5.1 and 5.5 ? Are there possible gotchas / caveats to planning to use Orchestrator 6.0 until you can upgrade your vSphere environment to 6.0?

How to Stop VM from suspending when computer is idle?

I am running OSx 10.8.  I am running a VM in VMware Fusion.   When I leave my computer for a while, my Mac goes to the login screen and I have to log in to the mac again, which is fine.  But I am also finding that when my computer is idle for a significant period of time, my VM inside of VMware fusion gets suspended, and I have to resume it.

How do I stop my VM from suspending in Fusion when my Mac is idle?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am running VMWare Workstation 11 on a Windows 7 64 bit host and trying to run Windows 7 64 bit in a VM. It used to work on my old PC, but I just upgraded and freshly installed Windows and am having difficulties. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

VMware, Jbod and Big Data

$

I see a lot of recommendations concerning using JBOD for big data appliations like Hadoop.  The reasoning I hear around it is "you don't need raid 5 because

1. "High availability is provided by the application so we don't need the protection of a RAID 5,6 or 10 array"

and

2.  "Performance is better with JBOD on SATA"

3.  "cost is cheaper"

So far these points have not made sense to me, because:

1.  for point one, just because HA is provided by the application, for example, hadoop can tolerate the loss of a singe vm with no problem.  I don't see why I want to make Hadoop do that if I don't need to?  Just because High availabilty is provided at the application layer, why do I need to go and take it away at the storage layer?  If I can lose a single RAID 5 hard drive without losing a VM, why do I need to take that away and use JBOD just because the application has its own HA?

2. for point two,  It seems to me you can get the performance you want with RAID 5 if the rest of the storage design allows for it.  For example, I can add more cache to the Array, I can use SSD instead of SAS / SATA.  And the solution I'm seeing proposed is JBOD on SATA. Why does performance force me to use JBOD on SATA?

3. For point 3, If cost is the constraint, then you have to obviously design around it. But it seems like I need to calculate and compare the cost before I say cost is a constraint.  Has everyone in the industry concluded that big data like hadoop on EMC is just too expensive?  Has anyone found that the cost is NOT prohibitive to using a normal Fibre Channel EMC array for example?

Please forgive my ignorance and correct my erroneous thinking....

vCOps Capacity Planning

$

I can use vCOps for troubleshooting, and there are published guides that explain things like performance troubleshooting.

However, has anyone put together a list of everything that vCOps monitors and how I should capacity plan for it?

For example:

1.  Every two weeks, run what-if scenario on each cluster for forecasting and capacity planning based on new VMs coming down the pipeline.

2.  Every two weeks, look at trends on IOPs demand on each datastore and determine when the IOPs demand would be saturated based on IOPs capacity of the underlying LUN and how much of that capacity is being used and the growth rate.

3. Every two weeks, look at the amount of disk space used on each datastore and the growth trend.  Based on the capacity of the underlying array (which I would get outside of vCOps), determine when space may run out on the array and require more disk shelves or a new array.

4. Based on the network bandwidth generated across the different ESXi hosts, determine the growth rate of network bandwidth usage.  Compare that with the capacity of physical NICs in ESXi hosts, and capacity physical switches.  Determine when bandwidth usage might create a bottleneck on physical NICs or switch backplanes based on current trends.

Has anyone seen or created such a guide for capacity planning that gives both a list of all the areas that I might want to use vCOps to check, how often I might typically check, and how I might best get that info from vCOps using reports, dashboards, etc.?  The performance troubleshooting guide is great, but something that addresses capacity planning would be great too.  I'm using vCops (vROps) 6.0.

Thanks!

NSX and subnets

If I am deploying NSX, which subnets should be on the physical layer and which should be in the network virtualization layer?

For example, I am building out a new enviornment with the following networks:

  • ESXi vmkernel management traffic network
  • NFS traffic network
  • Virtual machine traffic network
  • vmotion network

Other networks?  I am trying to map out everything I might need to define on the physical network vs what would be better to define in NSX.

List of Things to Orchestrate

I'm compiling a list of the top 40 highest priority things that someone without Orchestrator would want to automate / orchestrate once he gets it.  The assumption is that virtual machine provisioning is already orchestrated and vcac is being used as the front end, but nothing else has been automated.

Any ideas on the things I should put on my list?

Best cabling option for NFS

$

I am running NFS in a test lab.  I have a single NetApp 2240 storage system running NFS.  I have only one physical switch to work with, but as many switch ports as I need.  The 2240 has two redundant controllers.  Here is my thought:

-Use 4 ethernet cables total.  Run two cables to controller 1 and two cables t to controller 2.

-On the controllers - use e0a and e0b on each contoller together in a virtual interface

-Use etherchannel between the storage system and the physical switch

Given that I have only one physical switch to work with is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!

I am waiting for my vCAC deployment project to start.  Meanwhile I have Orchestrator up and running.  If i create workflows for things like provisioning Vms, adding RAM, etc. now in vCO, will I need to rewrite them later when I deploy vCAC?  Is it better to do vCAC and vCO workflows at once or what in vCO can be done ahead of time?

in general, I find vmware fusion 7 to be a disappointment.  I have run into many little shortcomings, understandable in a 1.0 version, but not in a 7.0 version.

* full-screen mode works on my screens only after bootup.  otherwise, the windows leave shadows, and I have to switch back to ordinary window mode and then back to full-screen mode.

* there is no more fuse support or vmdk support.

* it cannot boot a USB stick.  yes, it can simulate a virtual machine and it can access USB---but it cannot boot from it.

* one has to edit the .vmx file by hand for UEFI support.  really?  in 2014?

*  I have to set up networking in my guest to access my guest files.  in 2014, why can't there by a "cpvmdk" host command that understands how to place a file on a vmdk, perhaps pausing the VM for a moment to prevent conflicts if it is running, and just copying it when it is not.  vmware knows the format of the .vmdk files and the host has control of the guest.  this should be easy.  my host should be able to read and write files to its guest, even if my host (and/or guest) does not want to set up networking or sharing.  perhaps only for some known formats (vfat, ext32), perhaps only for some specific disk volumes---but this should work without networking.  I don't want to run networking.

fusion just seems like a neglected 1.0 product in anything that is just a little off the beaten path, and in some things that are not (like full-screen mode).

disappointing.

then again, virtualbox is so unstable, it blue-screens a server OSX after a few weeks.  it is rock-steady when linux is the server.  then again, they don't charge money, so I shouldn't complain.  for vmware, it's a different story.
