I am seeing this events on the logs for one of our ESXI servers, its running ESXI 5.5.0 build 2068190.

The only way to restore access to the VM is to restart the server. (Server is a Cisco UCSC-C220-M3S) Server is currently only running 1 VM.

Storage for MS SQL Clustering

$

Requirements:  Build a two-node SQL 2012 application cluster active/passive on Server 2008 R2 Guest OS spanning physical hosts.

I'm following the guidelines in  http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-55-setup-mscs.pdf

As well as the "Virtualizing SQL Server with VMware" publication from VMware press.

Questions:

Why does VMware "recommend" (but not require) Physical mode RDMs?  Is it just an issue of performance?  This DB is not intended for high performance.

Are there any issues with using Virtual mode RDMs for nodes spanning physical hosts besides performance?

Are there particular volumes that really benefit from physical mode more than others?

As you can probably guess, I would prefer to use virtual mode RDMs if I can, and only use physical mode where it is truly needed.

HP StoreFront Analytics for vCOps issue

$

Hello,
We have several HP 3PAR StoreServ Arrays we want to add, by HP StoreFront Analytics, into vROps.
I've this working at other sides with vCOps 5.8 and HP StoreFront Analytics 1.1.
This is my first try with vROps 6 and HP StoreFront Analytics 2.1.

The setup is pretty easy and not that complex, but it won't work.
vROps is installed and configured. I've added HP StoreFront Analytics as Solution into vROps.
When configuring the HP3ParAdapter Solution the 'Test Connection' failed in the end:

Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Failed to establish communication to the storage system.

I've tried many things and I have also HP support involved.

The vROps vApp and the 3PAR StoreServ's are in the same network segment.
No firewall is or can blocking communication between both.

From vROps vApp I can ping the 3PAR StoreServ's.

I filled up the right 3PAR credentials.

On the 3PAR, CIM is running and active:

cli% showcim

-Service- -State- SLP SLPPort -HTTP-- HTTPPort -HTTPS- HTTPSPort PGVer CIMVer

Enabled  Active  Enabled    427 Enabled    5988 Enabled      5989 2.9.1 3.1.2

cli%

I'm using the trail vROps and HP StoreFront Analytics period of 60 days.

Has someone the same experience?
Any ideas or solutions would be more than welcome.

vROps version: 6.0.2263102
HP 3PAR Adapter: 2.1.480
3PAR OS: 3.1.2MU3

Thanks everyone!

Hello All,

I am in the process of building Ms 2k12 r2 cluster based under Vcenter 5.5 , i am using ISCSI connecting to san storage (FreeNas 9.3)

Created an extent and export all drive for iscsi target, from each host connected to iscsi target and created from one of the lun's shared storage mount point in vcenter

Next  i added all RDM disk's and assigned it physical controller type and other guest added existing disk from mount point shared storage assigned to physical type controller.

All worked well i managed to create cluster and add install SQL , but suddenly i cant power on any more any of the two guest's i get following error below  , i really don't know where to start

Please advice

Thanks

Backup (archive) some VMs

Hi

I'm a low-level user of "Workstation 10" on a Win 7 x64 host. I want to remove some of my VMs from my PC, but I want to make a backup / archive which can be reused later on my PC.

What is the best way?

Is the export to OVF a good solution?

Cloning 2008 DataCenter R2

Hi all,

I have just cloned an offline Windows 2008 DataCenter R2 VM with guest customization.

When I boot the newly cloned VM it starts the guest customizations and then the following error occurs:

'Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer'

Any ideas? I have tried making the default of the VM to be cloned to Vista 64Bit but no luck.

Running vSphere U1. Do I need to change any vCenter settings to incorporate Sysprep. I thought it was built into Win 2008 R2?

Thanks for any guidance!

Peter.

Datastore Usage on Disk

$

6.0 has this listed as "Datastore is running out of disk space", but here is my question. All of our hosts don't have much storage available (Just enough for the OS and possibly an ISO or two). I'm only concerned with datastore usage if it involves our shared storage. We follow a regular naming convention and I'd like to somehow remove any alerting if it is in fact a local disk on a host. I can't seem to find where to customize that at and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. FYI: All our hosts are always at about 95-98% disk usage. Our shared datastores are at 60% as is.

Customization Specification vs Puppet

$

I am wanting to provision Windows VMs, and customize the guest OS only by assigning Hostnames, Ip addresses, default gateway, DNS servers, DNS suffixes, and that is it.  I don't need to provision applications afterward.  however I want that initial provisioning operation to be as clean as possible in doing that basic setup of the OS.  I don't need to do anything fancy.

Should I just do this with customization specifications or is Puppet better at doing this?

VMWARE-Mount question

$

Good afternoon,

Where do I start....  I have been tasked with creating a procedure for the following.

Current setup.

Users use VMWARE player to run VM's on their local machines, some machines will not run on certain hardware without errors.  Let me elaborate a little more.  We have DOS 6.2 VM's and Windows 3.1 VM's.  No that is accurate and not going anywhere anytime soon.  So to fix that...

Purposed setup

Run the machines on ESXi, grant the users rights to the proper container, use the dreaded web client for them to see the console.

Problems:

Users need to be able to transfer files between VM and physical desktop.  VMWARE-Mount...  I've got to this work but this utility is very frustrating to use...  I haven't used it for a "Remote" mount in years.  I do have PowerCLI as well(Not that this has anything to do with anything).

My question is this

1.  Is there a better way to do what I want to do?

2.  VMware-Mount.exe displays this message everytime I try to map the drive.  "Unable to mount the virtual disk.  The disk may be in use by a virtual machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive letter.  If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file."  I've tried multiple machines with and without snapshots(thought this maybe an issue).  Is there something I'm missing?

Sample of command

VMware-mount.exe m: "[datastore] Path to vmdk" /i:"Path to inventory" /h:vCenterServer /u:Domain\User /s:MyPassword /v:2

I've tried it with and without specifying the volume.  I don't think my syntax is off as I have tried changing all components of the command I always receive an error related to each part of it.  In other words if I change the inventory path I will receive a message indicating that, etc etc.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,

Timbo

When to add additional vCPUs

$

Have a 2012 Remote Desktop / Terminal Server with 17 users.  It currently has 40GB Ram and 6 vCPUs assigned to it.  Host is an HP DL360p Gen8 with 288GB Ram, 2x 2.9 GHz 8-core CPUs.

When I look at Task Manager, all 6 cores are being utilized and overall utilization is at 70-85% during the day.

Does it need an additional vCPU at this point?

VMWare Player on High DPI screens (Ultrabook) is TOO SMALL

I have a Samsung Ultrabook with a "retina" class screen.

When I run my VM, it is very very small.

I had the same problem on my Macbook Pro Retina, and there is a setting on VMWare fusion to double the pixel density on high DPI screens.

Is there an equivalent setting in VMWare player?

Can't install powerCLi

$

I am attempting to install powercli 5.8 U1 on a new windows 2012 box.  I installed the .net framework 4.5.2 and verified it is installed.  Then I went to install POwerCLi and got this error:

".net framework 2.0 is not installed on this machine.  Please download and install .net framework 2.0 before installing Vmware vSphere powerCLI"

What is the problem?  Do i need to uninstall .net framework 4.5.2 and use an earlier version like 2.0?

SharePoint wfe causing ESXi host cpu's to spike

$

Can anyone help me out. I have noticed recently that a host's CPU looks a little crazy. Similar to the attached "image1.png". I started moving every vm off of the host until I had one SharePoint WFE vm left which made the graph look like "image2.png" I have 2 sharepoint vm's that cause my Host to act this way. If I migrate all vm's off the host leaving either one of those SharePoint vm's the story is the same. However if i move the SharePoint boxes off of the host the CPU performance chart goes back to a more normal view like "image3.png" The environment have 6 host with 2 processor Sockets and 12 cores per socket. Hyperthreading is enabled. Most of the vm's have 2 vCPU's and 4 gb ram. However the SharePoint boxes are running 4 vCPUs and 16 gb RAM. "sharepointcpu.png" is an example of the cpu usage on the SharePoint vm. My question is this something a web front end would normally cause? Has anyone else seen this type of behavior? If so is it something to be concerned about? I also attache an esxtop output from the host.

vSphere 5.5 VM console access errors / MKS connection terminated by server & MKS malformed repsonse from server

$

I have just rolled out vCloud 5.5 and vSphere 5.5 and have struck an issue that re-occurs every 13 days after a physical host reboot.

When trying to connect to a VM console using either [vCD/Web Client/c# Client] I get the following errors:

1. Blank Screen

2. Occasionally MKS malformed response from server

3. Unable to connect to the MKS: Connection terminated by server

I have tried Migrating the VM to another host made no difference, restarting the management agents on the host made no difference, Rebooting the host

and migrating the VM back to host fixed the issue. Suspect a bug in vSphere 5.5 as all [3] host had identical problems. So far I have struck this issue twice and

my servers have been up for 7 days and expect the 3rd occurrence to occur 13/11/2013 ;(

Issue started 16/10 08:30am [first noticed]

Server uptime all [3] hosts 13 days

ESXi build 5.5.0 1331820

Issue re-occurred 29/10 15:00 [second time]

Server uptime all [3] hosts 13 days

ESXi build 5.5.0 1331820

Can't copy & paste and drop and drag with Mac OS X 10.8.5?

Hello.

I am using old VMware Fusion Pro v5.0.5 with updated Mac OS X 10.8.5 on both guest and host sides. I am unable to copy & paste and drop and drag anything (texts, files, etc.). I tried rebooting both guest and host, reinstalling tools, etc. I tried my other guest VM that is an updated Windows XP Pro SP3. It had no problems!

What's wrong with my Mac OS X 10.8.5 guest VM, and how do I fix it?

Thank you in advance.
