Copy/paste issue between ESXI console and guest

Hi guys

 

hope someone can point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this (sorry i am a bit of a beginner on this )

 

i have mostly used VMware workstation and local VM's before, and have today decided to move towards VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXI.

 

 

Thus i managed to installd from scratch a ESxi server(5.0.0) and connected to it via vSphere client, after which i managed to install a vm from scratch.

 

I did already install the VMware tools on the guest, - after which it improved the graphics to an extend, as well as allowing the mouse pointer to freely travel between guest and "Host" without being locked to one.

 

problem i am having (which was working in the workstation) - copy and  paste between my "host" pc ( aka where i am viewing the console form,  and the guest OS is not workign at all.

 

ie  - even if i select test on the guest notepad, copy it, and then rying to past it on the host - nothing is available on the clipboard.

 

 

i have already tried adding the settings as per the KB article

but no changes was noted  - i even enabled ssh on the host ESXI in order to add the settings in the etc/config file - and resarted everything just for the fun,

 

this is unfortunately important to get working - as i am probably going to have limited network connectiivty to the guest(s), so other methods of file transfer is needed(of which copy paste or even better drag and drop is the best...)

 

can anybody else recommend something i could try?

Hey everyone, Im looking for best practice on naming convention for linked clone pools.

 

i have multiple pools now that have different purpose and each time im naming them a little differently id liek to come up with a standard scheme. i want to see what other people are doing.

 

what im doing now.

 

location-poolname###-VDI

for example

US-OFF001-VDI (united states-office is the application, 001 is the number-VDI)

Powercli Get no of Powered-OFF/ON VM missing count

Hi,

 

I am running a powercli script to get count of powered-ON/OFF and below is the script snippet

 

     $VMs = $vmhost | Get-VM  

     $PoweredOnVM = $VMs | Where-Object {$_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOn"}

     $PoweredOffVM = $VMs | Where-Object {$_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOff"}  

 

The count result is fine if there are more than 1 powered-ON or OFF VMs on a single ESXi host but problem occurs if only one VM(either powered-OFF or ON) is present then the count shows nothing ..its just blank.

 

Any suggestions how to get the count to show as 1 if only one VMs exists on a single ESXi host?

Copy of VMGuest between vSphere servers

Dear All,

     I am new to vSphere (I have only use vmWorkstation).  At this time I am using the vSphere ESXi 5.5 server to host 10 vmGuset on my company server (Which is manager by our IT department) to development a project.  But I have complete the project I will need to copy all the vmGuset to the site server (using external hard drive).

     Can anyone please advice on the best way I can do this please (Do I just copy the vmGuset from the server and paste it onto the site server).

Having trouble configuring import from vCOps 5.8.3

I am trying to import data from my vCOps 5.8.3 installation to my new vROps 6.0 installation.  When at the "select sources" screen I put in the IP address of the vCOps system, the admin password, and hit "Add Source".  I get the warning that an agent needs to be installed on the vCOps system, click "OK", then am presented with the certificate from the vCOps server. I check the box to "Accept this certificate" and hit "OK", and it goes to a "Loading..." icon.  Within a minute or so I then get a Java error that says:

 

"Error occurred when trying to get source system info from 5.8.1 system: message = Unexpected character('G' (code 71)): expected a valud value (number, String, array, object, 'true', 'false', or 'null') at [Source: java.io.StringReader@4379be76; line: 1, column: 2]"

 

I find it odd that it references a 5.8.1 system when we are running 5.8.3 (verified via the "About" menu in the vCOps UI).  I'm not sure if that is part of the issue or if it is assuming that it is 5.8.1 or later because 5.8.1 is the minimum supported version.  Both vCOps and vROps are the appliance-based installs.  I have no special adapters installed, just the "out of the box" vSphere adapters.  Both VMs are on the same subnet and same ESX host, so there shouldn't be firewall issues.  I did follow the pre-req steps of confirming that I have adequate resources on both systems, as well as disabling dynamic thresholding on the source system.

 

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what this could be unless my source is being incorrectly identified as 5.8.1 instead of 5.8.3, and it is consequently returning the wrong identification string which is causing Java issues.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Different sizes of "same" VMs

Workstation 10, Win 7 x64

 

I have 5 VMs - 2 "mothers"(??) and 3 clones. Although the content of the VMs is nearly the same, the size of the VMDKs on the host is very different.

I mean the VMDKs which are in the folder which is defined in the "Settings - Options - Advanced"; but in other folders there are many VMDKs too

 

Every VM have a drive C:\ with 60 GB.

At the moment I'm not absolutely sure who is the clone and who is the mother.

All VMs are "compacted" and "defragmented" and "cleaned up"

RDP is not working

Hello,

 

I have have a dedicated server that was located in NY. I tried to create multiple VM's and tried to remotely access them here in Boston but it seems that doing the traditional RDP is not working. When I tried to connect to my Dedicated server and try to remote one of the VM's it is working but if I will remote it using my computer here in Boston RDP is not working.. Any Idea guys?

Upgrading Virtual Windows server 2003 to 2008

We currently run VI 2.5 with 3.5 U2 servers in a cluster. I was trying to upgrade (in place) a Windows server 2003 st. to Windows Server 2008. However when doing this the guest becomes unresponsive at (completely black screen in the console windows) and the setup reboot the guests and I boots back into 2003 (stating that the setup/upgrade failed). Is there a trick I need to be aware of?

VMNAT PACKETS STORM, WHAT ******* IS GOING ON?!

VMware 10 workstation

 

Host: Windows 7 x64

Guest: Windows XP SP3

 

when i ping a website in guest, then VMNAT enter a mad STORM state, it alway try to send a reply packet to my guest !!!

Trying to connect via https://localhost to running virtual machine -- empty page?

Trying to connect to a running shared VM with different browsers leads to an empty page. Hunting down with Wireshark shows there is realy no answer from Workstation 11.

Any others having this problem too?

Vcac 6.0.1 Guest agent for windows error

I am unable to get Vcac Guest agent working on Windows 7. I know that cert.pm needs to be imported in Linux. Do i need to do something similar in Windows?

ESXi configuration management

I would like to be able to check and report on all the following options on ESXi hosts to insure they are consistent.

-NTP servers

-DNS servers

-Active Directory joined to

-Firewall and services started

 

Can I report across my environment on these types of things with VCM? 

I want to report on the configuration of ESXi hosts in one view across many clusters, without having to check individual host profiles.

Unable to create AppStack

hi,

 

I'm currently evaluating AppVolumes on a simple environment with default settings "setup.exe + next, next", very easy to install !

When i try to create my first  AppStack the "create" button is greyed out, no templates found appear in the dropdown template.

something i miss ?

PS : it will be very nice to have a getting started guide for provisionning app stack

ESXi 3.5 32 bit version - Downloadable ISO

Hello,

 

Does anyone has VMware Hypervisor 3.5 32bit version, downloadable ISO?

My ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, build #207095 is not updateable, as I would have had to grab the update by June 2011.

I have had this test machine sitting all this while unpatched etc., as it was not in a production environment.

Now I need the use of a test machine and I do not have access to a 64bit machine and I just want to install the 3.5 again.

I have a BDC running on it and I can move it using Vmware Stand Alone Converter between my ESXi 5.5 U5 server and back.

I just want to have the latest patched installation on 32bit hardware!

 

If anyone has a link that I can get the latest 32 bit ISO, please let me know.

I have been searching downloads on this site to no avail. I believe they have ended support for 32 bit versions.

HP Smart Array P400 and ESXi 5.1

Hi,

 

This is probably a discussion for the Hardware section however I dont have permission to post in there so I am posting here.

 

I have just come into 4 X HP Smart Array P400 all complete with 512MB Battery Modules.

 

Does anyone know or have any experience with one of these Smart Arrays and will it work in a whitebox build? I believe I will need to update the firmware to 7.08 but it only mentions ESX 4, will this still work? Or, would I be better off passing through the RAID controller to a Window Server VM and run it that way? I dont have a Intel VT-d capable motherboard yet however. Just curious.

OS migration and user profile directory drive redirection. Mirage 5.2

Hi guys, we are facing problems with a migration from XP to Windows 7 with Mirage 5.2. The case is that users profiles directories are located in drive C: in XP and should be migrated to drive D in Win7. I know this is not supported by Mirage out of the box, but may be implemented customizing USMT xml files.

 

Do you know if this is feasible?  Did anyone face this requirement?
