NSX and physical switches

I am setting up NSX in a test lab with old switches.  Other than setting up 1600 MTU on the physical network what else do I need to do on the physical network to make sure it is compatible with NSX?  Does a cisco 2900 switch have the VTEP and other capabilities I need and what are those capabilities?

Workstation 11 USB 3.0 support

Has anyone been able to connect a USB 3.0 port to a VM guest running Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit OS?

USB 2.0 ports work great, but connecting any device to one of the hosts USB 3.0 ports results in the device not being able to connect "driver error".

As machines are replaced, the newer ones are being sold with USB 3.0 ports.

I did see in the Workstation 11 manual that it states on certain version of Linux and Windows 8 are supported for USB 3.0 (Same as Workstation 10).

Hardware: Dell Precision M660 (2 each USB 2.0; 2 each USB 3.0)

OS Host: Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

VMware: Workstation 10

Guest Build: Workstation 9

OS Guest: Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

How do I install an instance of Yosemite on VMWare Fusion 7?

Just got a Mac Mini with Yosemite preinstalled. I want to install an instance of Yosemite on my VM running Fusion 7. How do I do that? Do I download Yosemite from the App store? Will doing that create any problems?

I'm learning terminal, and I feel much better about futzing with it in a sandbox.

Creating Datastore capacity reports

I've had a look through the forum but can't find information on how to creating automatic reports (to be emailed) based on Datastores that are near capacity.

I could set this within vCenter but would rather create a report in vCOPs.  The version I am using is 5.8.1.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Resource Pool Automation

I'm currently being tasked with trying to automate resource pool allocation in our clusters.  Currently our operations team is struggling to size the resource pools automatically, or systems are migrated and the resource pool shares are not reset to the proper amount.  Is there a way I can automate the share amounts based on the memory and CPU for all the VM's in an existing pool.

Example.

Resource pool has 7 VMs in it totaling 100,000 Memory and 10,000 CPU shares.  System is migrated out and now the resource pool needs to be 80,000 memory and 6,000 CPU.  Is there a way to get Orchestrator to do the math for this and edit the resource pool accordingly?

On a fresh install of a vCSA, I cannot get the Client Integration Plug-in to download from the webclient correctly. I tries to install and comes back corrupt. Is there a place that I can download a fresh copy of the Plug-in? I would hate to redue my vCSA just because this is not working as it should

Hi,

over the last two weeks we have had a number of windows 2008R2 servers freeze.  the servers respond to a ping but the application seems to fail.  RDC to the servers also fails.  when you connect to the console the seems to respond to a ctrl & del command but as soon as you do this the screen just hangs at the grey login screen.

we are running esx 5.5U2.  just wondering if anyome else has got this issue?

Thanks

Virtual switch throughput

$

I've a simple confirmation query.

Say I've one standard virtual switch created out of 4 physical nic's, each with 10Gb uplink.

Will throughput of that virtual switch be 40Gb or still just 10Gb ?

If it's 40Gb then how traffic is load balanced via each physical nic, is it evenly divided ?

Is there a way I can find which virtual machines traffice on that virutal switch is passing through which physical nic at any given point of time?

the vm boots but right after guest loading of bootmgr, vmware stops it (i can see just a flash of the boot screen)

if I setup the vm as "other 64bit" or "freebsd 64 bit", it boots ok.

if I setup as "windows 10 64 bit" or "windows 8 64 bit", or any windows - it stops at boot with the mentioned message.

how to troubleshoot this?

Strange Printing Issue (bug?)

$

Hi All,

I'm having a strange printing issue from Microsoft Word 2010 within VMWare 7.1.0 running Windows XP and SP3. It happens both when I print to a physical printer and to PDFWriter to generate a PDF.

Text formatted as a "Title" within Word will not print. The space where it goes is simply blank. If I change the color, nothing changes. The font is the same as the font in the rest of the document. The blue "horizontal rule" below the title text itself does print, as does the rest of the document.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer in VMWare (by shutting down the VM, removing the printer port from the settings menu, restarting, shutting down, then "Adding" the printer from the settings menu). No change.

I'm kind of at a loss. Any thoughts?

Here's a screenshot showing the word window (left side) with the associated PDF (right side) next to it. Note that the title text, "Group 1", does not show up on the PDF (right side) printer.

Also note that this fails to print on a physical printer.

I'm at a total loss on where to go from here for troubleshooting. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How do I register all VMX files found in a list of datastores with new names

$

Hello-

I am trying to come up with a way to search through a given list of datastores, and upon each find of a .VMX file, re-add that machine to inventory only I would like to prefix the name of the machine as something different. Ie, instead of "Machine1", I would like it to be registetred as "auto-Machine1".  So imagine I have an empty datacenter with 4 datastores stored in an array $arrDatastoreToInclude,.  I would like to loop through each of those datastores and add all the VMX files I find back to inventory.

I know that I can use the following to get the datastores I want:

$dsindatacenter = Get-DataCenter $DataCenterName | Get-Datastore | ?{$arrDatastoreToInclude -contains $_.Name}

But I have no idea how to scan those datastores for VMX files and what command to add them back into inventory.  Can anyone help?

Is it ideal to trunk Internal DMZ & External DMZ VLAN subnets in order to use just one vswitch ?

Technically it is possible but is it an ideal design?

Can I use the total resources (cpu/ram) of two esxi hosts if I setup a cluster so that a single VM gets all the resources?

$

I'm using vCenter 5.1 with two esxi 5 hosts, both exactly the same (Evga SR-2 pc's with two Intel x5670 cpu's in each) except for disk storage. The x5670 cpu has 12 cores if HT is on. So since I have 4 of these processors that would be 48 cores. Each cpu is running at 4 GHz for a total of 16 GHz. Each host would also have 24 GB of ram so 48 GB total.

I doubt this is possible but what I'd like to do is to install just one VM like Win'7x64 and give all those resources to it...all of them (maybe leave a few cores and ram aside for the esxi hosts of course). Would that vm be running at 16 GHz? It'd be nice if we could create a cluster with a setup like this and give the "total resources available" to a single vm running on one of the esxi hosts.

I doubt this is possible because I tried this before and it wouldn't let me create a vm with that many cores or ram because it said they weren't available or something...as if to suggest I can only use the total resources of ONE esxi host.

Perhaps there's another way I could give that 16 GHz to one machine?

Since upgrading to the new VMware Player I can't keep the player open when I close a VM. With the previous version there was a setting under "File", "Preferences" where I could choose to keep it open. That setting has been removed now. Does anyone know of a way to keep the new version open?

Thanks.

I have an application that needs to set the PATH environment system variable but it does not set it during AppStack provisioning.  I even tried changing it manually for testing us both the Registry and under System Properties.  With Registry, as soon as I hit F5 it goes back.

Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to fix it?

Boot order issue after adding additional SCSI controller.

$

Hi all,

I'm currently building an workflow for adding additional several disks and additional 3 SCSI controller to a given virtual machine. After that the system isn't booting anymore, because the boot order in the Bios is nearly randomly.

I was trying to define the new boot order over the following code snippet. Unfortunalley this seems to brake the bios configuration. I can enter the bios, but I can not select or change anything in the boot order screen. No error message there is just nothing selectable anymore in the boot order screen. Anyone had this issue before ?

var bootOrder = new Array;

var bootDisk = new VcVirtualMachineBootOptionsBootableDiskDevice();

bootDisk.deviceKey = 2000;   // 2000 = Scsi0:0

bootOrder.push(bootDisk);

.

.

<done for several disks>

.

.

var spec = new VcVirtualMachineConfigSpec();

spec.bootOptions = new VcVirtualMachineBootOptions();

spec.bootOptions.bootOrder = bootOrder;

Task = VM.reconfigVM_Task(spec);
