JSON Payload for vRA SDK Sample Code - Unrecognized field "@type"

I'm working with the sample app for the rest api.  The sample app doesn't include the JSON file for the machine request payload.  I'm working from the "Programming Guide - vRA 6.2", and it gives a "JSON input file sample" for the machine request ( pg. 43 ).

The sample JSON begins with

{

"@type": "CatalogItemRequest",

"catalogItemRef": {

"id": "65fbca06-a28e-46f3-bced-c6e5fb3a66f9"

},

"organization": {

"tenantRef": "MYCOMPANY",

"subtenantRef": "cccd7a7e-5283-416b-beb0-45eb4e924dcb"

},

However, when I feed this to the sample code, the Jackson binding blows up saying:

Caused by: com.fasterxml.jackson.databind.exc.UnrecognizedPropertyException: Unrecognized field "@type" (class com.vmware.vcac.catalog.rest.stubs.CatalogItemRequest), not marked as ignorable (30 known properties: , "

I removed the offending property and it works.  Is this just a mistake in the docs?

Renaming  a replicated Datstore will cause any problem in configured SRM 5.1?

We are running SRM 5.1 for DR recovery of VMs/ Around 100 of Datastore have been configured with SRM. Now underlying VMs are getting protected as per SRM receovery plan & protection group.

Now management want to change the naming standard of existing configured Datastore in Primary site. My question simple renaming of those Datstore will cause or affect configuration of SRM?

High I/O latency disconnects users

Hello,

I have an ESXi 5.1 host which has two Linux guests. I am finding that if a disk intensive process is run on either of the guests then users who are logged into either guest using X Windows can get disconnected. If I look at the Events in vSphere Client I can see a message saying that "performance has deteriorated. I/O latency has increased". The host in question is running ESXi 5.1.0 2323236, and it has a 3ware SAS 9750 RAID card which is using the latest drivers.

Can anyone help shed any light on how I can resolve this?

Thanks in advance,

Richard.

vrops access control - apply roles vcenter users?

$

It appears that users that logon to vrops via the vcenter linkage get "admin" level privileges if they have admin level privs in vcenter. Anyone know if these privs can be changed in vrops? If I look at Administration > Access Control I see any users that have logged on that are not local as greyed out and no way to apply a role to them.

Thanks

How to span multiple LUN's onto One (or less) Datastore(s) in Vmware vSphere ESXi 4.1 environment?

Hey guys-

I currently have 2 ESXi Hosts (version 4.1u3), 1 vCenter Server, and 1 EMC VNXe3300 SAN (20TB via iSCSI) that make up my virtual environment.

On the EMC VNXe, you create VMware Datastores (which have a limit of 2TB) and then connect these Datastores to the VMware ESXi Hosts.  Once connected, you would continue the process by going through the Add Storage Wizard via VMware to connect the Storage Type of Disk/LUN via iSCSI.  In the end, the LUN(s) would then be accessible by the Virtual Environment (found in Configuration>Storage>Datastores) as typically expected.

Due to the 2TB limit (both on the EMC, VMware Version, & VMFS3) on the Datastores, I am left with having multiple Datastores being created on both the EMC side and the VMware side of things (see attached photo).  I know that this cannot be rectified via the EMC level, but I was wondering if there was anyway for me to join all of these Datastores together on the VMware side of things.  This way instead of navigating to Configuration>Storage>Datastores and seeing 6 separate iSCSI Datastores, there would just be one (or multiple, but less than the existing) Datastore; this would then span across all of the actual Datastores that I would specify.

I do not know what the appropriate terminology is used to describe this, but I would hope that someone would be able to assist me with what I am looking to achieve.  Or at the least, can you please steer me in the right direction.  If this is not something that can be achieved or if it is recommended against, what would be other option(s) that would be recommend?

Thanks for the help.

Command-Tab not working properly for application switch in Full Screen or Single Window mode

Fusion 6.04, OSX 10.9.4, WinXP

Command-Tab not working properly for application switch in Full Screen mode.

If the VMware Fusion Preferences window is open it works properly.

If I swipe right from Full Screen to my main OSX space then swipe left to the Fusion space then Command-Tab works once, but doesn't work second time if I Command-Tab back to the Fusion space.

This is on a brand new MacBook Pro 15" after upgrading from a 2010 MBP, and I restored everything to the new MBP from a Time Machine backup.  Used to work fine on the old machine, and I have made no changes to any settings on the new machine as far as I am aware.

Note that when it doesn't work, the Command-Tab cycles the focus on the open apps & folders on the Windows Task Bar, but without actually switching apps.

MacOS KeyBoard Shortcuts is enabled in Fusion Preferences.

I've tried changing the mapping of the Command Key to the Windows Key, none of the settings make any difference to the above behavior.

PXE "firmware" BUG

$

I think I have discovered a bug in VMware's PXE "firmware" layer.

The current test scenario is:

Host OS:    Windows 8 Pro

VMware:     Workstation 9

PXE server: Serva

When PXE installing guests OSs like Vista, 7, 8 the TFTP server transfers a Boot.wim of about 200Mb
That transfer presents a consistent TFTP error pattern that can be seen on Serva's Log like :

run#1

[10/26 16:15:38.723] TFTP Inf: Read file <\WIA_WDS\s2012_R2\_SERVA_\boot\ServaBoot.wim>. Mode octet

Serva TFTP windowsize = 16 8 for the tests above

The error pattern is as follow:

There's an initial error on a random block # < 6553532767, next the error periodically repeats in this case every 32760 blocks.
The period changes slightly if the windowsize is changed.
The error consists of the client not sending the corresponding ACK for a perfectly sent block (Wireshark),

The TFTP server recovers the errors and the file gets finally transferred with some delay.

The error pattern is only present when the net traffic uses virtual NICs only.
i.e. between Host and Workstation Guests running on the same hardware.
if the TFTP traffic "touches" a real Ethernet wire the error is not seen.

I have used other PXE servers (3com) and the pattern is also there

I have used different Host OS (Vista) and the pattern is also there

I have used old Workstation versions (6 and 8) and the pattern is also there

I've been reported from people using ESX experiencing the same problem.

I have tested changing the TFTP transfer inter-packet-delay and the pattern is not affected.

Initially the TFTP protocol only allowed sending max 32767 ACK but that is not enforced now.

I think you guys have some uninitialized (random value) short counter variable (2 bytes) triggering the first error when
changing its sign then doing it again periodically when the counter variable changes its sign again.

If you need more info let me know.

Error : Permission to perform this operation was denied -- Log : Must be administrator to access physical computer

Hi

Im trying to migrate a VM using Converter 5.1 but I get the "Permission to perform this operation was denied" error message when i select the source machine (which is powered off) or when i click on the "view source details..."

I see the following error in the Convertor Standalone client log file "[05496 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer"

The domain account I am using is a member of the Local Users group on the Convertor server and has Converter permissions on the source vCenter where the VM is.

Any ideas as to why I get this error?

Message was edited by: GuyTC : corrected errors in original question. It turns out my domain account was NOT a member of the Local Administrators group on the Converter server. Adding my domain account to the Local Admins group on the Converter server fixed the error.

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, as you will notice we are now testing a new format and template for the newsletter. It has been quite some time since we have made any changes to the newsletter and from time to time we like to try and freshen things up. Please feel free to send me any comments on the new format, what works and what you would think should be changed, I am always open to your suggestions to make this newsletter the best possible.

Next week is Thanksgiving and there will be no newsletter so please bear that in mind as well as any other potential VMware services that you might require over the long weekend. It is best to plan ahead so speak to your VMware TAM or account rep if you have any potential issues.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Look forward to speaking to you all again in 2 weeks time.

strange esxtop output, excessive pktrx = slow iscsi

So I have a Nexenta Community 3.1.2 VM on my ESXi 4.1U2 box, with the intent that it is able to take my physical storage/datastores and put them into a ZFS RAID format so my data has some redundancy.  I then export this volume as a iSCSI LUN and re-mount it in ESXi and format it as a "virtual" VMFS datastore so all my VMs are protected.

I have done performance testing on the Nexenta VM OS level, and can see that I can achieve 240 MB/s write 400 MB/s read sequentially.  Unfortunately the performance on that same exact volume mounted back to ESXi via iSCSI is much slower, typically about 120 MB/s write 140 MB/s is the max i can squeeze out of it.  Nexenta doesn't currently support VMXNET3 vNICs so I have been experimenting with setting up multiple 1 GB vNICs with corresponding VMKs with round robin mutipath with 1 iop in order to allow more than 1 Gbit/s of throughput over that iSCSI channel.  After many different testing combinations and got maybe 10% performance improvement over a single vNIC and VMK.  In general, more vNICs in multipath io with iops=1 gets me SLOWER IOPs performance but slightly higer total throughput than a single vNIC.

To reiterate it a bit, ALL performance described here is within a single VMWare 4.1 U2 host, none of the traffic actually flows over a physical NIC.  I have isolated all of my storage vmks on a separate vswitch, my vNICs are each in separate port groups with different non-routable ip subnets in each portgroup (corresponding with the vmk IP addresses).

While investigating these bottlenecks in esxtop, i have seen something strange and pasted an example below.

2:04:48pm up 2 days 11:27, 247 worlds, 8 VMs, 0 vCPUs; CPU load average: 0.45, 0.46, 0.46

In this configuration I have 2 iSCSI paths open and am monitoring the network performance as a possible bottleneck.  You can see vmk1 and vmk3 active on the ESXi host, corresponding to two interfaces on the VirtualSAN VM.  I expect the PKTTX on the vmk to roughly equal the PKTRX on the VirtualSAN interface, and for the inverse to be true (PKTTX:VirtualSAN = PKTRX:vmk).

I have seen numerous times for an extended period of time (e.g. 40 GB write when iometer prepares a disk, so about 20 minutes sustained) that the RX and TX values are not even close.  In the example above the vmk PKTTX is about 600 and the vmnic PKTRX is about 16000.  That is a huge difference and could be the source of my problems...

The one thing I have not done yet it so sniff the VirtualSAN's vnic interfaces to see if those extra PKTRX are retransmits from the vmk, or something else.

Any words of wisdom?  Has anyone ever done a pure virtual network (e.g. firewall/route between two portgroups) and seen the metrics be so far off?

Error in connecting VR-LOCAL to VR-REMOTE

Hi,

When I try to connect the vCenter-Remote I get the follow message:    Unable to connect or disconnect the vSphere Replication Management Server.

Looking the log file /opt/vmware/logs/hms/hms.log, I see this error message:

2015-01-08 02:59:41.880 ERROR hms.remote.SiteManager [Ping Thread for server <IP>:8043] (..net.impl.VmomiPingConnectionHandler)  | Ping for server <IP>:8043 failed: com.vmware.vim.vmomi.client.exception.InternalException: Managed Object 'HmsServiceInstance' thrown unexpected exception 'java.net.UnknownHostException' with message 'vcenter55.xpto.intra' when invoking method 'ping' : Managed Object 'HmsServiceInstance' thrown unexpected exception 'java.net.UnknownHostException' with message 'vcenter55.xpto.intra' when invoking method 'ping'

Is it possible to change the <IP> to a name???

thanks!!

NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/cpu/fpu.c:452

I am trying to run ESXi on a lab box.  I was not able to install 5.5 (purple screen of death during install), but was able to install 5.1.  Now, in the vSphere client when I configure any VM to boot from an ISO (I've tried Win XP and CentOS Linux) I get;

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/cpu/fpu.c:452

The ESXi box has an AMD A4 CPU.  The ISOs are uploaded in the datastore.  My client machine has VMWare Workstation 9 on it and that works fine (probably irrelevant, but just mentioning in case there is some conflict).

Any ideas?  I wasn't coming up with much via google.  Is this saying there is some sort of issue with FPU virtualization and the A4 and/or chipset on the box?  AS far as I can tell, the A4 supports AMD's virtualization technologies.

Hi everyone, it’s the final month of 2014 and the countdown to the festivities I am sure have begun wherever you are located. Here in San Francisco the city is starting to get ready for the season with beautiful lights in the city and activities such as outdoor Ice Skating. There was no newsletter last week due to the Thanksgiving holiday  here but we are back as usual this week.

I have been quite busy with a number of VMware solutions and Proof Of Concepts. This past week I have been focusing on Log Insight (http://www.vmware.com/products/vrealize-log-insight) a solution that I am very fond of and pairs very nicely with vRealize Operations (http://www.vmware.com/products/vrealize-operations). I find deploying, setting up and using Log Insight extremely easy and right away I am already seeing results. If you haven’t had a chance to look at these solutions you should check them out.

Onwards to this weeks newsletter.

image010.pngFROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

Hi everyone, well it’s the final newsletter of 2014. I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone. It seems like just yesterday I was packing my bags and heading for San Francisco to start my new life. It has been an amazing year for me personally. I am so proud to be part of an organization such as VMware that is dedicated to creating the best software products it possibly can.

I wanted to share with you something even more important that VMware has done for the past 2 years now. As an employee of VMware we are all given access to a fairly generous amount of time that we are able to use for the benefit of charitable work. This is something that many organizations do and I think it is fantastic as it really allows us to give back to our communities and in the process we learn so much doing this. VMware however goes one step further and gives each of us a donation on Global Giving (www.globalgiving.org) that we are free to use as we see fit on any of the worthwhile charities that are available. This is a very simple gesture but for me it is so important as it reminds me every year as I go through the list of charities how fortunate we are to have what we do, and how rewarding giving rather than receiving can be.

I hope that you have enjoyed another year of VMware newsletters. I have certainly enjoyed doing them and going into our 7th year is going to be even better.

I wish all of you and your friends and family a safe, healthy and happy holidays and I look forward to speaking to all of you again in 2015.

Virtually Yours

Hosts not loading in Web Client only.

A weird one this. We are not able to view Hosts or Clusters in the web client. Perfectly fine in the Windows client. We've increased Java memory for Web Services, Web Client Server and RAM for the vCenter Server VM itself, updated vCenter and our clients, rebooted numerous times and restarted Inventory Service.

We're on vCenter Server 5.5.0 2001466 and the Hosts are on 5.5.0 2143827.

If it was the CIM service I'd have thought that would effect the Windows client as well. Anybody have a similar experience?

VMWorkstation 11, I I cannot copy file(s) into my VMWare image, is there a setting I need to change or is this a bug?

I am using a Windows 7 64-bit OS laptop running VM Workstation v11.  I have a Windows 7 64-bit image running and would like to copy files from my regular laptop to the VM image.  I did not have this

issue when using VM Workstation 10.  I'm not sure if this is a bug or a setting I need to change.  Any ideas?

How to reserve multiple subnets for a particular Business group

$

     Hello,

       I am trying to provide more than one subnet for a particular business group, through creating two network profiles, and having them assigned in the business group reservation.

  But, whenever a blue-print (Single Machine Blue Print) is deployed, it always take the IP from the first range, or first profile.

Is there any way to control this, and have the user decide which subnet he wants to get the Machine in ?

I am using VCAC 6.0.1

I still don't get it... Why is there an option to check box on multiple network paths, and multiple network profile in the reservation page (network tab), if its always just the first selected.

I appreciate if someone can clear this.
