[Workstation10] Closing VMware application when Closing VM

$

Goodmorning,

We're using VMware Workstation version 10 to run Windows 2000 Pro with a version of WinCC 5.1 to run a project. To have everything setup:

Is it possible for me to shut down the VMware application when shutting down the VM?

vSphere tags as columns in Operations custom report

$

I need to create a custom report in vRealize Operations that shows certain vSphere Tags as columns.

For example, among other vSphere Tags, there is one category called "Owner" and the tag is the name of a person in the company. I want to create a report with a column "Owner" and the value must be the name of the person.

Is this possible?

Thanks.

D.

VCSA 6.7 ISO cannot boot. I have tried it on multiple system and it just doesn't boot even though all other .iso's do.

Does anyone have a solution to the non-boot issue of the .iso?

Fusion 10 on MacBook Pro High Sierra, Windows 7, can't see USB adapter in USB-C Port

$

I have a newer MacBook Pro running High Sierra and Fusion 10.  Using a virtual Windows 7 machine that was upgraded from Fusion 8.

The MacBook Pro has only USB-c ports, but I need to attach an external drive which uses a USB connection.  I am not able to get Fusion to see the USB device.  I have tried this with a hub, and with a straight USB-C/USB adapter.

Fusion does see my USB-C ubikey, so I know the native port works.

Any suggestion on connectors/adapters that Fusion will be able to see in this scenario?

Thanks

Susan

Essential 5 to 6 license key upgrade

We have a host with ESXi 5.1 U1 using VSphere 5 Essential license.

We need to upgrade this host and its license to 6.5, in order to be able to deploy an additionl new host, sharing the same VSphere 6 Essential license but requiring a minimum ESXi 6.5

We can upgrade the ESXi from 5.1 U1 to 6.5 as the current host supports it.

Which are the right steps for upgrading the license and the ESXi software in order to minimize the downtime / risk and be prepared to deploy the new host in next future?

Can we upgrade the license from VSphere 5 Essential to VSphere 6 Essential in MyVMWare and then apply the new 6 license in the current ESXi 5.1 U1 ?

Is the ESXi U1 accepting a VSphere 6 Essential license?

Or do we need to perform the upgrade of the ESXi at the same time of new license generation?

Urgently need help please - Running Mac OS High Sierra using Fusion 10 - go to start VMWARE and message comes up saying can't find VMDK file so won't boot

EP Ops Windows service monitoring

Hello,

I'm using EPOps to monitor Windows services but have noticed that when a service goes down and an alert is sent, there is no mention of the server that hosts that service and since these service alerts are being catered for by engineers that atm don't have access to vROPS it is proving very unfruitful for us.

Does anyone know if it is possible to add the server name in the Windows service alert?

Thank you!

vRO 7.4 is not logging workflow runs and complaining of Lucene60

Just updated my home lab vra/vro from 7.3.1 to 7.4.0 .  Installation seemed to go flawlessly, except vro.

When I try to run a workflow, the workflow completes, but nothing is in the log.  When I look at the system log, I see:

Hi All,

Does anyone know if vCenter Server 6.5 U1 with Update Manager on Windows is likely to support a database hosted on SQL Server 2012 Enterprise x64 SP4 any time soon? We're currently on SP3 and would like to upgrade to SP4 which isn't currently showing as supported in the interoperabiltiy matrix.

Thanks,

Rich

Disk consolidation issues

Hi,

So I am in an situation that for some reason we have a lot of deltas and the server needed disk consolidation done.

But when I go to start it it gives me the following error

"An error occurred while consolidating disks: msg.fileio.lock."

Now I did see the following article https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2107795  but am a bit lost on how to the steps

Also I did find this following article as well https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1027876  that I could clone the latest delta file to a new vmdk

Would this clone be in essence the latest vmdk as if I did do the consolidation?

The other issue is the amount of free space, which is currently at about 500GB. and the machine consists of  2 hdd, 1 - 147GB and 1 - 500gb

I forgot to mention this is on ESXI 5.5 as well

Thanks

How to make this powercli Script that i created to run faster than now?

$

Hello VMware and Powershell Experts,

I have created the below powercli script to collect inventory of our 5.5 and 6.0 VMware Hosts, VMs and Clusters. The problem with it is, it is terribly slow. It takes half a day to run this script fully to get details from 3 to 4 of our vCenters. Is there a way to make this script faster, by reducing the processing times, and cutting down unwanted loops, while maintaining the exact output, as requested by my manager? Input vcenter information at line 3 of the script. Thanks a million in advance!

Brownfield NSX deployment - to create a new DVS switch or not

$
0
0

We are installing NSX into our Production environment. Consists of two linked vCenters and 200 or so hosts. The question I have to you guys is when you did this in a Brownfield type deployment, did most of you use your existing VDS switch, or create a new one? The hosts we are POCing NSX in Prod on are new, so there would be no problem making a new VDS switch. My concern is when we get to the point when we want to NSX-enable the other clusters, they will still be using the old non-NSX enabled VDS.

I am having a hard time thinking thru this alone. What did you guys do? What are your recommendations? Any thing to consider or any gotchas?

VMWare Workstation 14.1.2 build-8497320, locks up

VMWare Workstation 14.1.2 build-8497320, locks up "non-responsive"; "waiting on IO" so says vmware.exe service. Workstation window becomes faded (2 "vmware.DMP" files available).  Host Can't Kill the app or the service, SO Only solution is complete Host CPU Poweroff then Restart.  And often the VM Guests  are damaged "beyond repair"  So Win 10 Pro kills all apps, keeps user data and installs a very fresh copy (like out of the box) of Win 10 WITHOUT any settings for local environment.  UGLY and Time Consuming.

Happens when switching to another Workstation VM tab, even when only one vm is powered on, others in shutdown mode. The powered on VM is damaged, as are all powered on VMs. See above.

Same VMs running GREAT on 3 active instances of VMPlayer.  Easy to switch between VMs (and host)

Dell Precision Tower 5820,  Intel Xenon W-2125, 64GB,  MR9440-8i SCSI Disk Device  Raid 5, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations 1803 17134.165  All Dell drivers and bios are current. All Dell's system tests pass.

I've been a workstation user since version 6 days.  First time I've run into non-responsive lockups that require host poweroff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Confused about where to run the vCenter Migration Assistant

$

I am testing vCenter migration from vCenter 6.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2 to VCSA 6.5. In the Migration Assistant, it says

at the top: Make sure the Migration Assistant is running on the source.

at the bottom: Do not run this installer from the source Windows Server.

and https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.0/com.vmware.vsphere.migration.doc/GUID-50A5705E-80E7-4305-BB43-B041D4B206E8…

"You must Copy and run the VMware Migration Assistant on your source vCenter Server or vCenter Single Sign-On to prepare it for migration from Windows to an appliance."

Should I launch the Migration Assistant from the source vCenter 6.0 or not?

Please clarify. Thanks,

Como devo proceder para um backup desses arquivos? Alguem pode me dar um help?

NSX vxlan VMs cannot reach each other via routed fabric

Hello Community

I'm designing NSX over routed underlay and stuck on bizzare thing that drive me into insomnia. I susspect i miss something trivial, but ture is that VMs cannot reach each other via NSX vxlan when sitting on pods separated by L3 fabric.

I pulled out summary of my infrastructure below plus HLD diagram

Pod - two racks in DC with pair of L2/L3 Tor switches

vCneter:        6.5U1

NSX:              6.4.1

Underaly:      Nexus 9k

Topology

  • L3 Leaf/Spine partial mesh
  • two L2 Pods separated by L3 routed fabric
  • NSX transport subnets routed between pods using OSFP
  • vMotion and storage routed via L3 fabric
  • vCenter managment streached between pods via cisco VXLAN
  • inter DC is DWDM
  • Latency is less than 0.5 ms

NSX transport layout

  • unique vtep subnet per Pod
  • same  VLAN ID on both pod (local on each pod)
  • Default gateways on TOR swiches per pod for NSX transport vlan
  • VTEPs use vxlan stack poining to default gateway which is vlan transport SVI on ToR switches
  • Single transport zone accross compute clusters

vCenter layout

  • Sigle vcenter
  • single compute cluster per pod
  • streched managment cluster accross pods
  • ESX hosts are dual homed - trunk
  • DVS uplinks are A/S and explicit failover seetting as LB algoritm

Issue

  • VMs cannot reach each over vxlan when placed in pods
  • VMs can ping each other when placed on different hosts in same pod

Addons

  • No errors accross all stacks (cisco, vcenter, nsx, storage), all green and happy
  • VTEP IP pingable between hosts on vxlan stack
  • MTU 9000 end-to-end
  • NSX Controllers see vxlan and VMs
  • ESXi hosts see controlers and vxlan stack
  • OSPF proapgate both transport subnets
  • ICMP packets coming out from ESXi hosts and then are not seen again
  • When do trace from NSX  packet arrive local host vtep and it knows about peer's vtep IP and nothing more happen next

Also when i move NSX transport vlan into cisco VXLAN (what basicaly streach this vlan between pods) VMs start to communicate.
