Workstation 10 hosts on windows 8.1 pro very unstable.

Went to a huge SANS conference last week and had the misfortune of having my existing windows 7 laptop die.

Had to get a window 8.1 pro- Asus laptop with 8 GB ram and and Intel 5 chip in it.

Product is extremely unstable.  Doing any of the following causes corruption of the image and a big dump.

  • Putting the host in pause
  • PC goes into standby mode.
  • Other unknown circumstances.

When the image becomes corrupted, you can sometimes delete the lock and mem files and folders and restart - but it doesn't always work.

Host will partially load with the spinning vmware icon and then become unresponsive.  Clicking or trying to close the tab will indicate the host is busy.  You actually have to go into task manager to kill it.

I had the tech support (VMWare) on the phone for two hours one night and they didn't know either.  They were able to witness the above events - they suggested I post to the community forums.  Other people including the SANS instructors have been having issues with windows 8.1 as well - considering SANS runs mostly vmware images.

The image we were running was a Fedora 8 linux - so it shouldn't be all that much of a taxing system or be unknown to vmware.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Sincerely,
