VMWare Player Locks Up Entire System Starting Win10 VM Under Ubuntu 18.04

I have an AMD 8310 processor that I enabled for virtual machine use (a BIOS option but I don't recall the exact parameter).

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.1, kernel 4.20, and VMWare Player 14.1.5.

I run Win10 occasionally, just for two apps that don't have a Linux version and won't run under WINE.

If I have been using my system for a few days after the last reboot and start VMWare to boot the Win10 VM, once the VM start window bar pops up and before I notice any movement on the loading progress bar, my system halts hard - no keyboard response, no mouse movement, the system monitors and clock are all halted. This is pretty consistent and repeatable. I can start VMWare and the Win10 VM after rebooting and this is true if I run it on an empty system or after I've started my normal tasks (Thunderbird, Firefox, Joplin, RedNoteBook, PlanMaker) before starting VMWare.

I have checked system and the VMWare logs but can't see any message that will help. I have also checked for stray processes that are 'stuck' from the last time I ran VMWare.

Anyone else have experience with VMWare Player like mine?
